At events like Mobile World Congress and CES, OEMs like to show off new tech to carriers and other folks behind closed doors. In fact, this is when many OEMs are able to get deals with carriers to sell their device(s). And this year, Samsung is reportedly showing off their bendable tablet – likely a prototype – to a few people behind closed doors. According to Sammobile, this tablet can be folded up to 90-degrees.
This tablet, is reportedly going to be able to be used as a laptop, though as usual the report is light on details. Which leaves us wondering if the screen will be slightly curved or bent, when the device is folded. It’s definitely possible that bending the tablet will let us prop it up on a table without additional support, or it could be something even more exciting or innovative. However, whatever it is, we can pretty much guarantee that LG will announce the same thing (or something similar) via press release just days before. It’s like clockwork for Samsung’s fellow Korean competitor.
Obviously the model that Samsung is showing secretively at Mobile World Congress is just going to be a prototype, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see something released later this year. Some of you may remember that at CES 2013 Samsung showed off curved displays and by the end of the year they had announced the Galaxy Round, right after LG announced the G Flex. So it’s entirely possible something could be announced later this year, but as usual we’ll have to wait to find out.
Foldable displays are definitely interesting. Imagine having a phone as big as your tablet, and being able to fold it down to a much smaller phone to fit in your pocket. It’s definitely something I’d love to have, what about the rest of you?
