The Unpacked 5 event was crammed with energy and good vibes, and although it wasn’t as much of a show stopper event like last years, it still had somewhat of a dramatic opening compared to pretty much any other press event ever. All jokes aside, the Unpacked 5 event was still great to watch and see Samsung announce a handful of new devices and talk about their features. Of course they announced the long awaited and rumored Galaxy S 5, but Samsung didn’t stop there, as they unveiled a line of new “Gear” devices as well to display some of the new compatibility between Galaxy devices and Gear smartwatches. Samsung’s main focus this time around was bringing clean and elegant design with strong ties to fitness to all of these new devices, including the Galaxy S 5. The new flagship, which houses a heart rate sensor on the back, can help you track your heart rate while you exercise, and the phone even has a water and dust resistance rating of IP67 in case you like to exercise in the rain.
Samsung talked about a slew of other features on the phone as well as all three new smartwatch offerings they have for this year, including speed, camera, screen quality etc. Samsung’s CEO JK Shin revealed the new phone while David Park showed off at least one of the new Gear smartwatches. So just to recap, Samsung announced the Galaxy S 5, The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches, and the Gear Fit smartwatch. The Gear 2 and The Gear 2 Neo both have a couple pretty big changes, like leaving the Android software behind and using Tizen instead, and they also have the added “home button” on there now so you can more easily back out of apps that you’re using and get back to the home screen without having to swipe your entire way back. The Gear Fit since this is it’s first iteration, has no predecessor to compare itself to, but it is also running Tizen just like both Gear 2 smartwatches. The entire event is really something and if you enjoy Samsung devices it’s worth a watch.
