Sony has typically released quite a few flagships, in 2013 they released the Xperia Z, Z Ultra and Z1. Although one could argue that the Xperia Z Ultra was not your typical flagship as it was a phablet while the Xperia Z and Z1 was not. In speaking with K-Tai Impress, Sony Mobile’s Creative Director, Director of Product Planning and UX General Manager, Yoshiro Kurozumi stated that he feels a half a year upgrade cycle is a better fit for the industry. Lately we’ve been seeing everyone move to one flagship per year. Or one smartphone and one phablet flagship per year. But Sony is looking to stick to, two flagships per year, so we’ll probably see the next one at IFA in September.
According to Kurozumi, in order to maintain the status of flagship, you must upgrade it faster to keep competition alive. He also stated that the Xperia Z2 will be Sony’s only flagship for the first half of the year. What else is interesting is that Kurozumi stated he doesn’t want to rely on a single design, which kind of hints at Sony switching up the design of their phones in the near future. Moving away from their OmniBalance design language which we’ve seen throughout the Xperia Z lineup, including the Xperia Z, ZL, Z Ultra, Z1, Z1s, Z1f/Z1 Compact, and now the Z2.
Now if only Sony could be this quick with pushing out KitKat to their customers. The only Sony smartphone that has KitKat, officially, is the Xperia Z2 and it’s not even out yet. Which is kind of sad. So I’m hoping they can make a big turnaround with updates. After that, they should be able to compete with Samsung as their hardware and software is there. They just need to bust into the US market a bit more.
