While ZTE might not be known too well in the West, they always have something to show off during Mobile World Congress and this year, they’ve bought something pretty big along with them. The Grand Memo II is a 6-inch device that brings a Snapdragon 400 and Android 4.4 KitKat to the tablet. With a sleek design, too it looks like ZTE could have a successful device on their hands. However, as with most ZTE handsets it’s hard to tell whether or not this will be available outside of Asia.
The Grand Memo II is not necessarily meant to be a high-end device and the specs on the inside tell that story for themselves. With a Snapdragon 400 running the show, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 16GB of storage and LTE support the Grand Memo II seems mixed up. The 7.2mm thickness, 3,200 mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat are also reminiscent of a high-end offering from ZTE, and yet the Snapdragon 400 is at the heart of things? The same CPU is found inside of the Moto G and it does seem a little strange to see this CPU at the heart of such a device. As well as this, the six-inch IPS panel is sporting a resolution of just 1280 x 720.
Still, ZTE have put a fair amount of focus on software here with the Grand Memo II, putting their MiFavor 2.3 skin atop Android 4.4, which is the latest version of their software build designed to make Android more friendly and appealing to an Asian audience. So, for all intents and purposes it would seem that the Grand Memo II would be a compromise device. It features LTE, a large display, the latest version of Android, but it’s cut corners where needed in order to deliver a more attractive price tag.
