LG’s G Pro 2 might be making its way to store shelves in some parts of the world towards the end of this month, but that isn’t all that LG has planned for this year. The true successor to last year’s very capable G2 is still to be announced, and while there’s not much known about the G3 so far, it looks like we have a little more information to go on. Last week we saw the model number D850 appear in LG’s own website logs, with a UA Profile showing a screen size of 5.5-inches and a resolution of 2560 x 1440, now that same model number has been benchmarked and hints at something very interesting, indeed.
A leaked benchmark image (which you can see below) shows that the D850 is running a MediaTek MT6595, or at least that this D850 is running such a chip. There’s no way of telling if this is a prototype or something else entirely. Right now, I can hear a lot of you thinking “why use such a poor quality processor?” The fact is however, that the MT6595 from MediaTek is a very capable chip indeed, and yes, it’s an Octa-Core chip. The chip itself features a pairing of a quad-core Cortex A17 processor with a top speed of 2.5 Ghz, with a quad-core 1.7 Ghz Cortex-A7 CPU which is designed to do the light-lifting and be gentle on battery life. Interestingly enough, this isn’t a 64-bit CPU, which means it doesn’t benefit from newer core designs from ARM, which is a shame, but the chip is no slouch and is said to be comparable to the Snapdragon 801. Of course, LG will definitely struggle to turn consumers around to that idea.
That’s really all this leaked benchmark tells us, while also telling us the display resolution once more. If LG were to use a MediaTek CPU in their G3, it wouldn’t be the disaster that a lot of users would lead you to believe, but it would however be incredibly difficult for LG to convince consumers. With the marketing that Qualcomm employs with their Snapdragon line of chips, even the average consumer knows to ask “does it have a Snapdragon?” We’ll know more soon however, and no matter what CPU they choose to use, the G3 should be another great device from LG. We would take this with a little salt, as historically LG has had a very good relationship with Qualcomm.
