Fido – Raises Prices, Lowers Data, and Increases Subsidy Allowance

Canada’s Fido and Koodo are making news, but not in a good way – on many of their plans, the prices are increasing but data is decreasing.  Fido continues to break their plans down into three categories, Standard, Smart, and Max that are only different based on the amount of subsidy a customer must pay when they get a new device.

With this new update in programs and pricing, the Standard and Smart plans are identical in features, but the Smart plan will cost you an extra $5 a month because Fido increases the amount you can apply toward the subsidy – an extra $150 towards your new phone subsidiary – rather than $200, you now can apply up to $350.

As far as the plans themselves go – the $29 Standard plan that offered 200 minutes and no data is completely gone and replaced by a new $34 a month plan that offers the 200 minutes, but also 50MB in Data.  Fido then jumps you to a $39 plan with 300 minutes and 300MB of Data.  Next is a new $44 plan that will allow you 500 minutes of talk and 500MB of Data.  The $54 plan will up your minutes to 1000 and Data to 750MB, while the top $64 plan will give you unlimited talk minutes and 1GB of Data.  For additional Data the $34 plan is $5/50MB – the $39, $44 and $54 plans are all $5/100MB, and the $64 plan will cost you $5/250MB for extra Data.  As stated above, just add an additional $5 to any of the Standard plans to jump up to a Smart plan to get up to the extra $350 off and new phone on a two-year agreement.

Fido’s Max plan will allow you to save up to $450 off a new phone when you sign a two-year agreement – this also jumped up $50 from $400 to $450.  There is an $80 a month plan that will allow you unlimited Canada-Wide talk minutes with 500MB of Data and an $85 plan that keeps the unlimited minutes but bumps you up to 1GB of Data.  Under both plans, additional Data will cost you $10/500MB.

Fido will still allow you to Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) and receive an extra 10-percent off of the Standard plans, making your monthly fee – $30.60, $35.10, $39.60, $48.60 and $57.60.

The long and the short of it is that while Fido increased the subsidies for new devices, so have the monthly prices gone up and data being decreased.  Please let us know on our Google+ Page if you are a Fido subscriber and what you think of the recent changes that were implemented.
