When rumors started circulating about Oppo’s Find 7, it sounded like a wish list more than an actual phone that’s going to be released to market for a reasonable price. Oppo’s latest flagship features not one but two models, with the Find 7a having a 1080p display and a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, while the Find 7 will have a Quad HD 2K display and a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor. It’s obviously this second higher-end model that’s getting all the attention, simply because it will not only be packing the latest in mobile processing technology but because it’ll be the first phone to ship with a 2k display that features 4 times the number of pixels found in a 720p screen. That’s not the only crazy number that Oppo is pushing these days though, they are also packing a 13MP Sony sensor on both versions of the Find 7 which is able to take 50-megapixel shots via an interesting trickery in the software. We’re still not 100% sure how the camera does what it does, but the results speak for themselves as you’ll see below.
We’ve taken the shots that ePrice has provided and zoomed in 100% in each one. The left shot is the 13-megapixel shot while the right shot is the 50-megapixel shot in all 3 examples. These are all real shots, not some PR touch-ups, and the second two aren’t in any sort of ideal conditions either. Looking at the first one we can see that the 50MP shot resolves more detail in general, and has significantly less noise when zoomed in on. The bars at the top of the building are more clearly visible, and overall the picture looks more crisp. The second two shots are inside a mall, with the first series being in a well-lit area. Zooming in on the decorative objects on the pavilion reveals significantly more detail in the 50MP shot over the 13MP one, and again there’s significantly less noise in the 50MP shot as well. The last series of shots is a mixed bag, and may show that Oppo’s 50MP trick doesn’t help much when in low light conditions. Most of the shot is pretty blurry when zoomed in on the 50MP side, and you can resolve more detail in the 13MP picture particularly when looking at the lights. On the flipside here this is likely just a bad shot, and anyone who took the picture would likely retake it if this weren’t a test to see which mode is better without tweaking anything.
Regardless it’s pretty obvious that Oppo’s tricks here are paying off and the 50-megapixel shots really do a much better job at giving you that fine detail than the 13-megapixel sensor on the device would initially lead you to believe. While they aren’t quite as sharp as something from a Nokia Lumia 1020 might be, these appear to be the most detailed pictures we’ve ever seen outside of that phone anyway. Kudos to Oppo for coming up with such a method, and we’re looking forward to seeing more samples in the future.
