When Sony announced the Xperia Z2 on stage in Barcelona last week, we had a feeling that it wasn’t going to be cheap. After all, Sony is a company that holds their devices in high regard and understandably wants to make a profit. Besides the mysterious price tag, we didn’t have an exact date for when the device was going to launch. It looks like UK retailers have helped us out and with that, and we now know that the Xperia Z2 will hit UK shelves on April 11th, and that it won’t be cheap.
Right now, pricing has only been announced by Phones 4U in the UK, which doesn’t have a SIM-Free price for the handset just yet. That’s somewhat unfortunate, but judging by the monthly cost on the Xperia Z2, it’s not going to be a cheap phone no matter how you pay for it. If you would like a free phone n a 24-month contract, you can expect to pay £57.99 a month on Vodafone, with unlimited calls and texts and 9GB of data. Ramping up to paying £99 upfront brings the price down to £42 for two-years on EE with just 4GB of data. As direct conversions, these prices won’t help much for our US readers, but as a resident Englishman, I can say that the Xperia Z2 isn’t a cheap smartphone. Then again, what can we really expect when you’re getting the device cost, line rental and service all in one bill?
Confusing things further for our friends in the UK is the color options of the Xperia Z1. O2 has exclusivity on the purple version of the device and the white version can only be had from Phones 4U. Now that’s out-of-the-way, we can talk offers. Pre-ordering from P4U will get you a free SRS-BTX300 wireless speaker from Sony, and if you order the device on a 4G tariff you’ll be given £50 of Google Play credit. Hopefully, a SIM-Free price becomes clear soon, so that those looking to buy the device outright can start saving up those pennies for April 11th.
