Sony announced the Xperia Tablet Z2 back during Mobile World Congress last month in Barcelona and they turned heads thanks to the device’s thin frame. Coming in at just 6.4mm thin, there’s no arguing this is one of the thinnest tablets on the market. Other specs include 3GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 801, so there’s plenty of horsepower in this skinny slate. Of course, with a focus on being thin there are compromises here, with the 10.1-inch panel boasting a 1920 x 1080 resolution, which isn’t as good as the 2560 x 1600 panels that we’re used to seeing on high-end tablets like these, but it’s more than good enough.
We know that the Xperia Tablet Z2 is going to be launching some time later this month, but we’ve no word yet on an US launch, let alone if it’s coming to a carrier. Thanks to the enterprising folk at the FCC however, we have a good hint that it’s coming to AT&T’s LTE network. The device recently passed through the FCC with LTE bands for pretty much any carrier you like, but it was only tested on LTE Band 17, otherwise known as AT&T’s 4G. The Tablet Z2 is up for pre-order in Sony’s own UK store for £499, which is roughly $825 here in the US, but that’s just a conversion. If you were looking for a rough figure to go by, we’d bet on something in the region of $499 or $549 without contract.
Sony’s tablet has come a little late, the Galaxy Tab Pro series has just hit the scene with much better displays, and some pretty good marketing to boot. With a 1080p panel, the Tablet Z2 seems capable of appealing only to those looking for something attractive and super-portable, rather than “the best”. That’s not a bad thing though, as this guy is water-resistant, making this a fairly durable tablet, indeed.
