There’s been a lot of news and rumors lately about the Nexus program and how this year’s Nexus could be the last one with Google switching over to the Google Play Edition devices. Many of us thought that it might be Lenovo making the Nexus 6, and that it was part of the deal for Motorola. But according to Gizmodo, it looks like LG has scored the Nexus once again.
Gizmodo is reporting tonight, that they received some details from a person in the know who stated that the Nexus 6 is being made by LG. This source claimed that the new Nexus would be a “lightweight” version of the LG G3, which hasn’t been announced yet, but we are expecting it by the end of the summer. Rumors about the G3 have pegged it at a 16MP camera on the back QHD display which is a 2560×1440 resolution display, a 64-bit processor and a few other high-end specs. Which leaves us wondering what “lightweight” means.
However, if we look back at the Nexus 4/Optimus G and the Nexus 5/G2, those Nexus devices were also lightweights, obviously to meet the price point that Google wanted. So it’s not surprising that the Nexus 6 will be a lightweight version. But what is surprising is that Google has given the Nexus smartphone rights to LG for a third year. Which I’m not going to complain about because I feel they’ve done a great job with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, and with their skinned flagships like the Optimus G, G Pro, G2 and G Pro 2. It’s going to be an interesting fall in about 6 months when the rumors really start flying around.
We’re not expecting to see the Nexus 6 until around October/November. But we could see a Smartwatch from Google I/O this June, which we are equally excited about.
