It seems like just yesterday when Sony announced the Xperia Z2, and here we are already with software from their latest flagship. Just a mere 3 days ago someone on the popular Android developer’s forum XDA-Developers was able to get ahold of a system dump of the Xperia Z2, giving developers the entirety of the software on the device for possible porting to other Xperia devices. Now just 3 days later we’ve already got quite a bit of the new software that Sony has been touting, including that incredible new camera software with 4K video recording, background defocusing and 360 panorama shots, among others of course. Right now it looks like as long as you’ve got a Sony device that’s running Android 4.3 or higher you should be able to take advantage of most of the features of the camera app as well, however 4K recording is going to only work for the Xperia Z1 since that phone’s chipset is the only one that supports 4K recording. The list of Sony devices that work with the camera app include the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z, Z Ultra, ZR, V, SP, TX and probably any other ones we might have missed that are running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean or higher.
But the camera software isn’t the only thing that’s been ported from the Xperia Z2; we’re also seeing everything ranging from the new home launcher to the calendar app, messaging, sketch and notes app and even all the system sounds. Basically you can turn your existing Xperia phone into an Xperia Z2, without all the cool new hardware stuff of course, all by just having root access. Some of these apps don’t require root access, but any time you get this far into modding your phone it’s probably worth trying to figure out how to get it rooted so you can get maximum enjoyment out of the process. As always with these sorts of things you’re going to have to CYA and make a backup before you screw anything up just in case something bad happens.
