This afternoon, the Facebook camp has pushed out a new update to the Facebook Messenger app. The update is rather small but does feature WiFi calling, which definitely is not small. If you were a part of the beta group, then you already know what to expect, if not, here’s what’s new in this update:
“Groups: Now you can create groups for the people you message most. Name them, set group photos and keep them all in one place. Forwarding: Want to send a message or photo to someone who isn’t in the conversation? Just tap to forward it on. Conversation Shortcuts: Create a shortcut so that you can get to any conversation right from your home screen. Free Calls: Talk as long as you want and stay in touch wherever you are. (Calls are free over Wi-Fi. Otherwise, standard data charges apply).”
So that’s yet another app with free WiFi calling, and this time it’s a pretty big app. Facebook Messenger for iOS also got updated and now has free WiFi calling as well. You can think of this like VoIP where you are placing calls over a data connection instead of voice. Which is definitely the future, especially as soon as VoLTE starts rolling out on Verizon and other carriers.
The update is available now and you can grab it from the Play Store, or the link in the source down below. It’s a nice little update to Facebook Messenger, and one that’s sorely needed for Hangouts with Google Voice. Hopefully Google is just waiting for Google I/O to announce Google Voice integration with Hangouts, but who knows.
