Android 4.4.3 is definitely in the works and on its way, we know that much. What we don’t know is just how soon it will be here, or really how far off we might be from getting the install on our own devices. Some new details have come to light however that point to the update being closer than we might think, as the Google Edu Device setup app has just been updated to support Android 4.4.3. For those who are unaware, the Google Edu Device setup app is for use with schools who purchase tablets for use by students to as part of the Google Apps for Education program. Android 4.4.3 also popped up on the Bluetooth SIG listed with the Sony Xperia Z Ultra the other day as well, so it shouldn’t be too long now before the update begins to roll out starting with the Nexus device line up.
Even though this new Android build won’t likely focus much on anything but bug fixes, those of us who look forward to a smoother user experience while using their devices can’t wait to get our hands on it. The Google Edu Device setup app lists that support for new Google spreadsheets, minor UI updates and bug fixes, and support for Android 4.4.3 in the What’s New section of the changes, so we wonder if some other apps will start to get their updates to support the new version soon as well.
With Android 4.4.3 being referenced a few times within the last week or two, it’s safe to say that we’re probably getting pretty close to the release. It should hit the Nexus 5 first, then likely roll out to the new nexus 7, Nexus 4, Nexus 10, and Nexus 7 2012 edition, and then most likely roll out to the GPe devices thereafter and so on. This might no be the most exciting new Android build, but hopefully we’ll get a chance to see what’s next for Android when the time comes for Google I/O, which is only a little more than two and a half months away. As soon as the Android 4.4.3 update begins to roll out, we’ll be sure to update everybody here.
