Motorola Takes Us Behind the Scenes on their April Fools Boot Animation

Some of you may remember Motorola’s April Fool’s boot animation on the Moto X and the Moto G. It was updated to show the “Powered by Android” which Google is supposedly mandating on all devices now even through OTAs. To do this April Fool’s joke, Motorola enlisted the help of some friends A UFO, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Yeti. Motorola also says that this boot animation will be available until the 12th of this month, so if you didn’t reboot your Moto X or Moto G on April 1st, you’ve still got time. With Motorola’s Boot Services app being in the Play Store, it means they can update it quite frequently without the carriers getting in the way. So Motorola has been changing it up a bit. In the winter we had a nice winter animation, and then April 1st we had a new one with a UFO, and a few other friends.

“We said, how about we give a life to the boot up, make the animation richer, and tie it to what our users care about,” said Motorola product manager Meet Jariwala. It took about 192 frames, which means about 192 different pictures, to pull it off. “For this project, stop-motion was a fun choice,” animator Kirsten Lepore said. “It had a handmade feel for the canvas of the phone, and you could really develop things like fur for the Yeti. It’s always more fun when you can see small details.”

You can read the entire behind-the-scenes post that Motorola has posted up on their blog from the source links below. It’s rather interesting to see how they did it too. Something you don’t see every OEM doing either, which is nice. Those of you with a 2013 Motorola device, I’d urge you to reboot your phone and check out that boot animation, I think you’ll like it.
