Typically, OEMs don’t announce how many units they shipped or sold in a quarter. Typically, you’ll see it the device is doing well, or shortly after a launch. Like with Samsung, they announced they shipped 10 million units in the first month of the Galaxy S4’s life cycle last year. But today, Motorola announced that they had shipped 6.5 million devices in Q1, that’s the three month period running from January 1st to April 1st. That might not sound like a lot for Motorola, especially when compared to Samsung, but it’s a pretty big jump for them. This number does include the Moto X, Moto G and all current DROID devices. And I’d say that probably about half of those devices shipped were Moto G’s. That device has done very well for Motorola in the short time it’s been around so far. Motorola has even said it’s been their biggest seller ever.
By comparison, Samsung sold 10 million Galaxy Note 3’s in 2 months, and 10 million Galaxy S4’s in 30 days last year. So it’s definitely slower than what Samsung’s pace is. But the thing here is that Motorola is improving. They can’t just start selling smartphones like Samsung overnight. It doesn’t happen like that, unfortunately. But it’s good news for Motorola, in spite of it’s pending acquisition by Lenovo. It’s looking like Lenovo isn’t going to do much to Motorola and change it, at least for the first year or so. It looks like Motorola will operate on its own, which is good to see. Motorola makes good stuff, but the Moto X didn’t take off like it should have because of the specs. If they had put a Snapdragon 600 in there – even though the Snapdragon 600 and Snapdragon S4 Pro are basically the same – it would have sold much better I think.
How many of you bought a Moto G, Moto X, DROID Ultra, DROID Maxx or DROID Mini – or any other Motorola smartphone – in the past three months? Let us know in the comments below how you are liking that device.
