We’ve been hearing about Android “Silver” for a little while now. It’s been rumored as a new program from Google and their hardware partners which would bring more high-end hardware to the Play Store. Android Silver would see Google selecting high-end Android smartphones and promoting them with their standardized software, through both the Google Play Store and some retail channels. Likely Best Buy, Amazon, and Radioshack to name a few of those retail channels. Now according to The Information, it appears that Google is still working on Android Silver and is making it take aim on the iPhone as the top smartphone.
According to The Information, here are some of the highlights:
“Android Silver will replace the Nexus hardware program; Silver phones will get prompt software updates; Silver phones will feature premium hardware; Google will promote Silver phones at carriers and other retailers via its own marketing dollars; The Sliver program is set to launch in the US, Germany, and Japan “as soon as next year”
The Android Silver program consists of specific goals for hardware, software and promotion. Which means they’ll be pushing these devices pretty hard when Android Silver is actually announced. We may see more information about the Android Silver program at Google I/O in the end of June. But it’s still likely that we have one more Nexus product cycle as it takes nearly a year to get a phone ready to release. Especially when you’re launching it on a new version of Android. We may also see a few more Google Play Edition devices this year as well, although it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting a Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition, just yet.
