Wearable technology like smartwatches and fitness trackers will be hitting the market in droves this year and with the recent announcement of Android Wear devices hitting the market this summer, manufacturers such as Samsung will have to step up their game somewhat. Recent launches of the Gear 2, the Gear 2 Neo and the Gear Fit have certainly shown that Samsung is capable of creating some excellent devices. In the case of the Gear Fit, Samsung has shown that they know what they’re doing when it comes to wearable form factors. The curved display on the Gear Fit makes it more comfortable on the wrist and also makes it an aesthetically pleasing device, too.
All of these devices need power of course, and Samsung SDI, battery maker extraordinaire has created a curved 210 mAh battery. Small enough to fit onto your wrist and potentially help makers develop devices that curve to your wrist, these advancements in battery tech will really help push things forward in the wearable game. 201 mAh sounds like absolutely nothing when Samsung’s own Galaxy S5 smartphone ships with a 2,800 mAh battery, but for wearables, that are designed to sip power 210 mAh is actually a sizable battery.
Lee Kyung-sang, of Samsung had this to say about the recent announcement: “As the global market for smartbands is anticipated to expand sharply in the near future, Samsung SDI will continue to make efforts to become the No. 1 player in the smartband batteries market.” We often forget that creating components is one of the many things that makes Samsung so successful in today’s market, and manufacturing key components for the smartbands and smartwatches of tomorrow is a great way to only keep the money coming in, but also encourage innovation in your hardware design of your own products.
With Android Wear watches hitting the market this summer, it’ll be interesting to see what Samsung does. Motorola have already unveiled some ambitious plans with their Moto 360, but we’ve yet to hear anything from Samsung on what their Android Wear device will look like. Probably because the Gear 2 line has only just launched, but that doesn’t stop us from being any less excited.
