Samsung's Gear 2 Gets Torn Down by iFixit

A usual with new devices, iFixit tears them down showing us how easy or difficult it is to repair it, and things like that. Just last week, they tore down the Fire TV from Amazon, and revealed that it’s pretty difficult to repair. Now it’s the Gear 2’s turn. Which will be on sale starting this Friday, with Pre-orders already on-going. iFixit didn’t tear down the original Galaxy Gear, so it’s hard to compare it to it’s predecessor, the Gear 2 does have a removable battery. But it appears that is not the only component that is easily removable in the Gear 2. According to iFixit, all they needed was a screwdriver and a bit of prying to open it up and get everything out. They also noted that moving the camera from the strap to the watch’s body, makes it easier to replace the strap on the Gear 2. The only bad news here is that the display is fused to the rest of the device. So if you damage the display on the Gear 2 at all, it’ll need to be completely replaced. Not the end of the world really, but still not what we’d want. For a $300 device, it may be cheaper just to get a new Gear 2 than to get the display replaced.

iFixit gave the Gear 2 a repairability score of 8 out of 10. So there you have it. The tear down of the  Samsung Gear 2 from iFixit. It’ll be interesting to see if they tear down the Gear 2 Neo – which I don’t expect to be much different than the Gear 2’s teardown – and the Gear Fit. As everyone seems to be really interested in the Gear Fit, including me. All three of these wearables are on pre-order now and hitting store shelves on Friday. How many of you are interested in picking one up?
