Toshiba just announced the other day that they have developed the “world’s fastest” microSD cards for memory storage. They are the first cards to comply with the new UHS-II² memory card standard Version 4.20. Right now, they are offering them in 32GB³ and 64GB capacities.
“Toshiba’s new microSD memory cards offer the fastest transfer rates available, are UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) enabled, and allow high-quality 4K video capture at constant minimum write speeds of 30MB/s. This means that 4K2K video, live broadcast and content can be recorded on high-performance cameras.”
The 64GB card (part number – THNSX064GBK5M4) has a maximum Read Speed of 145MB per second and a maximum Write Speed of 130MB per second and uses the exFAT File Format. The 32GB card (part number -THNSX032GAJCM4) has a maximum Read Speed of 260MB per second and a maximum Write Speed of 240MB per second and uses the FAT32 File Format…considerably faster than the 64GB card. With the 32GB card you are looking at 8X the write speed and 2.7X the read speed when we compare it to the current 32GB microSD UHS-I cards. What do these faster transfer rates mean to the user – that large data files, such as music, picture and video files can be moved onto the microSD card faster and saved and can also be read faster when viewing them back on the device…whether it be a smartphone, a tablet, DSLR camera or movie camera.

Toshiba was the inventor of flash memory and they offer a wide assortment of memory cards for just about any device that can use a memory card. Toshiba said that they would continue to enhance these cards. Sample shipments for chipset vendors and set manufacturers for mobile devices are available now for their testing. No pricing or consumer availability was given.
As mobile devices are used more and more in our society, hi-speed memory cards need to keep up with the speed of the chips in these devices.
