When the NSA and other security-driven organizations were found to be conducting nefarious deeds and spying on people’s private information, many were appalled that this type of information could be so easily accessed. Afterall most of us do everything from personal conversation to banking on our phones anymore, and that makes it a one stop shop for anyone looking to get that information. Never fear though, as Blackphone is here to save the day, promising the most secure environment for all your data and the hardware to back it up too. Originally the Blackphone was unveiled at MWC 2014 back in February and it promised an environment so secure the NSA might not even be able to see your stuff. While that last part isn’t explicitly promised, you’re guaranteed to get one of the most secure phones ever if Blackphone’s custom version of Android 4.4 KitKat, called PrivatOS, turns out to be everything they say it will be.
While all of this sounds fine and dandy, most of the time when we get a smartphone as specialized as this the specs usually leave something to be desired. At $629 the Blackphone is priced very similarly to every other flagship smartphone out there from the big names like Samsung and HTC, but what sort of user experience are you going to get here outside of feeling safer? To put it simply: an excellent one. Of course specs aren’t everything, but they go a long way to providing a great user experience by utilizing features of the hardware with great software. The Blackphone will feature a 2.0GHz Nvidia Tegra 4i processor complete with 60 custom GPU cores for excellent 3D performance. Not only that but the Tegra 4i features Nvidia’s i500 LTE modem, supporting LTE bands 3, 4, 7 and 20 as well as GSM and HSPA/WCDMA for wireless support just about everywhere. It’s also packing 1GB of RAM, and 8MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera and a 2000mAh battery. The display should be pretty comfortable at 4.7-inches, and the 720p resolution is pretty good for the size of the screen, delivering a 312 pixel-per-inch density. Overall the Tegra 4i inside the Blackphone promises performance and great battery life, and the PrivatOS in the Blackphone promises a secure and stable environment. Look for the Blackphone to start shipping in June to Europe and the Americas. Check out the official Blackphone website for all the details.
