This morning Fedex dropped off the Sprint variant of the Samsung Galaxy S5 at my doorstep. I’m excited to review the Galaxy S5 for two reasons. One, because I’m interested in how Touchwiz has improved since the Galaxy Note 3 last fall. The second is to see how much Sprint’s network has improved since I reviewed the HTC One Max last fall. But we aren’t reviewing Sprint’s network here, so we won’t talk much about it. As far as the Galaxy S5 goes, I actually kind of like it. And this is coming from a guy that’s not a Samsung fan. Sure the back does look like a band-aid especially on the gold version. But on the black version it looks nice, and it feels great as well. There were a lot of complaints about the build of the Galaxy S4, and it being slippery. No slippage here. It’s got that soft-touch back that you’d find on the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2013) and the design of the Nexus 7 (2012), although it doesn’t feel like the OG Nexus 7.
I have checked out the camera already, albeit briefly. It’s pretty good. Obviously I haven’t put it through it’s paces completely yet, as I just got the device today. But the extra resolution will probably make it a better camera than the HTC One (M8). However, you can look forward to our camera shootout between those two devices in the near future.
So first impressions are that I’m impressed. And that’s saying a lot. More thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy S5 in the next week or so. The full review will be out soon, and it’ll probably be one of the longest reviews I’ll write this year. Don’t worry, there’ll be lots of content between now and then as well.
