The Samsung Galaxy S5 has been selling in Canada now for just over a month in both Charcoal Black and Shimmery White. We knew other colors were going to be offered, we just did not where or when – some of that mystery has been cleared up today with tweets from both Samsung of Canada and then quickly followed up by Rogers. The new Copper Gold and Electric Blue are making it their way to Rogers’ subscribers “soon,” but no indication from Samsung if other Canadian carriers will carry the new colors as well – but we may see another carriers tweet later today. Since Samsung gave no indication they would be a Rogers exclusive, there is a good bet that other Canadian carries will sell the two new colors as well.
The Galaxy S5 is off to a strong sales start as reported by Samsung Mobile Chief, J.K. Shun – he claims that 11 million units have been shipped since it first went on sale April 11. This is a 10-percent increase over the Galaxy S4 from last year – of course, what they forget to tell you is that the Galaxy S5 launched in 125 countries, while the Galaxy S4 was first launched in 60 countries – could be the reason for the increase. The Galaxy S5 has also seen early price-cuts and Buy-One-Get-One (BOGO) free on a few networks.
Regardless of sales figures, the Galaxy S5 is a solid, if not exciting, device with a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED Full HD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution with 432 ppi. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 Quad-Core processor clocked at 2.5GHz, with 2GB of RAM and either 16GB or 32GB internal storage backed by a microSD slot that will allow up to 128GB of expansion. It sports a 16MP main camera and a 2MP front-facing camera for video chats and selfies – the pictures are excellent. The Galaxy S5 also has a fingerprint scanner, Heart Rate Monitor, comes with Android 4.4 KitKat, and is water and dust resistant.
