On Monday, one of Sprint’s prepaid carriers Boost Mobile shook up their prepaid plans. They axed their $50 for basic phones and $55 for smartphone plans, as well as the shrinking payments. Which if you paid your bill on time, you could shave as much as $15 off your bill. Which was definitely a nice feature, and a nice way to get people to pay their bills on time. Now Boost Mobile is offering a $40 plan which includes 500MB of data, $50 includes 2.5GB of data, and $60 includes 5GB of data. Which as usual, these all include unlimited talk and text. These prices and plans aren’t too bad, and further align themselves with competitors like T-Mobile, Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, Aio, and others. Although, I’d have to say that T-Mobile’s prepaid plans are still a bit better. And there are two reasons. Their $30 plan gets you 100 minutes and 5GB of data, or the fact that you can’t just bring any phone over to Boost Mobile, like you can T-Mobile (and the other prepaid carriers listed above), which is a big selling point.
Nonetheless, it’s great to see competition in the prepaid game. It’s a great service, especially if you buy the Nexus and then grab a prepaid plan from T-Mobile or AT&T, it’s really good. The prepaid business is really coming back to life now. I mean T-Mobile added about 465,000 prepaid customers in the first three months of this year alone. They actually probably have the biggest prepaid business, then Sprint with their Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile brands. AT&T is about to make a major push into prepaid as well since they just scooped up Cricket and are planning to roll Aio and Cricket into one company. Which is going to be prepaid on steroids I believe.
