Google Stars has been leaked and rumored for a bit now. Basically what it is, is a new bookmarking service from Google. It’s supposed to be more intuitive and easier to use. The Chrome extension is now live in the Chrome web store and the interface is live as well. Once you install the Chrome Extensions, you’ll be able to access the web interface, and it will automatically “add the Google Magic to your data”. What it does is collects information from your web history, of things your interested in, or your current bookmarks. Then it arranges your favorites and bookmarks by date.
Users are able to organize these into folders and even share folders if they so choose. Additionally, the Google Star icon will replace the “bookmark” icon that we’ve seen forever in Chrome. That way you don’t duplicate your favorites or bookmarks. It’s great to see bookmarks finally getting overhauled, although we don’t yet have the Android app that we also saw floating around about a month ago. I’m sure that’ll make it’s way into the Play Store soon enough though. Right now, Google Stars is Chrome centric, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it pop up on Chrome for Android and iOS and even on other web browsers as a plugin or extension.
While the extension is live now, it’s still technically in the dogfooding phase so it may get taken down pretty soon. So you better hurry up and install it before Google finds out that it’s out there. It’s definitely a pretty great service, and one I’m sure we’ll hear more about at Google I/O next month.
