During their event today at Paris, Huawei have announced their latest and greatest, the Ascend P7. Aiming to be a 4G LTE smartphone for Europe, the Ascend P7 is a five-inch Full HD smartphone complete with quad-core CPU and Android 4.4.2, KitKat. On paper, the Ascend P7 seems just like any other smartphone to be released this year, but there are some interestign quirks that will help the Chinese manufacturer’s latest stand out from the crowd. It’s incredibly thin, offers a premium build and will be available – completely unlocked and free of contract – for quite a bit less than smartphones from the likes of Samsung, HTC and co.
Under the hood, there’s a quad-core 1.8 Ghz CPU running with the show with 2GB of RAM helping out. We’re assuming this is one of Huawei’s own processors, designed in-house at the heart of the Ascend P7. On the imaging front, there’s a fourth-generation Sony sensor at 13-megapixels around back, and interestingly an 8-megapixel shooter around the front. Android 4.4.2 is here and while that’s certainly nice to see, it’s a shame that Huawei’s Emotion UI – with lack of app drawer and all – seem to get in the way rather than offer a better experience. Still, launching with the latest version of Android is a great move on Huawei’s part, so too is the addition of a microSD card slot which will please many that might not have access to fast wireless speeds to stream music and such. Speaking of data speeds, the Ascend P7 is fully compatible with 4G LTE in all of its launch countries.
Physically, the Ascend P7 is a little taller than last year’s Ascend P6 to accommodate the larger 5-inch display, but it’s still crazily thin at just 6.5mm thick. A 2,500 mAh battery is squeezed into the 124 gram body, which Huawei is promising will last another 24-hours when put into “super power-saving mode” with as little as 10% battery left. A good-looking device all round, there’s definitely an air of the iPhone about the P7, but depending on what you’re looking for, that might not be an awful thing. The device itself is flanked with Gorilla Glass in order to deliver a durable device.
With a launch price – in Europe – of €449, the P7 is designed to be a premium device that ticks the vast majority of boxes without running wild with features. By keeping the formula relatively simple, Huawei keeps the price down and can sell the device at a reasonable price tag. The Ascend P7 will be available in China, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Serbia, Greece, Norway, Hungary, Denmark, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE. A concrete release date has yet to be announced, but we expect the P7 to be available a little later on in the year.
