Nest CEO Says Ads are not coming to your Thermostat

Yesterday, we heard that Google was looking to put ads on the Nest Thermostat in the near future. Later on, we heard that Google denied that and it was untrue. Now we are hearing that Nest’s CEO, Tony Fadell is reiterating that ads are not coming to their thermostats. Tony Fadell recently spoke with Re/Code and told the whole story.

“Nest is being run independently from the rest of Google, with a separate management team, brand and culture. … For example, Nest has a paid-for business model, while Google has generally had an ads-supported business model. We have nothing against ads – after all Nest does lots of advertising. We just don’t think ads are right for the Nest user experience.”

While we may see some ad-supported appliances in the future from Google and Nest, you can rest assured that their current crop of appliances will not be ad-supported. Which for those that have already bought them, is a good thing. Yesterday, we saw a lot of people getting upset over having ads on their thermostat. But it’s important to remember that Google is an ad company. Google makes almost all of their revenue from Ads. So it shouldn’t be surprising at all to see ads coming to a new product that Google has. Although Nest is run independently from Google right now, I’m sure they’ll combine soon.

So there you have it, straight from the horses mouth. No ads on your Nest thermostat. Now if you haven’t already picked one up, they are available on the Google Play Store as well as at your local Lowes, or Home Depot. Not that the ads would be a bad thing, because knowing Google it wouldn’t hinder the way the thermostat looks. And more than likely most people don’t sit there looking at their thermostat all day either.
