The OUYA has had an interesting ride over its lifetime, and the little games console that could has come along way from a simple kickstarter campaign. Now a real product you can walk into a store and purchase, or buy online, the OUYA was the first Android games console to make us believe it was even a viable concept. Since then, the software on the OUYA has gotten more and more sophisticated, and while competitors like Mad Catz’s MOJO are far more powerful, the OUYA still trundles on. Now, it looks like OUYA will be getting a big shot in the arm thanks to the folks at PlayCast. This latest partnership should bring Triple-A gaming titles to the OUYA thanks to cloud gaming from PlayCast.
You might be unfamiliar with PlayCast, essentially a company that offers a comparable service to the ill-fated OnLive, and basically lets gamers stream console games through their TV. PlayCast has actually been around for some time now, it’s just they’re more of a company that fits in the background, rather than in the foreground. OUYA has now partnered with PlayCast and the mug-sized console will soon be able to stream titles available in the PlayCast catalog. This opens the door for a whole bunch of high-quality titles for the OUYA from big publishers like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Konami, Warner Bros, 2K, Namco Bandai, Square Enix, Capcom, Codemasters, Disney, Sega and Atari. Finding the exact catalog seems to be a little tricky, but there’s a lot on offer from PlayCast.
The OUYA has never really suffered from a shortage of games, but there’s always room for more in a gamers library. Being able to stream high-quality titles – like Splinter Cell: Conviction – is a big boon for the platform, as storage and processing power leaves a lot to be desired in such a small box.
