When the Samsung Galaxy S5 was announced back in February in Barcelona, a lot of jokes were made about the back of the device. How the gold one looks like a band-aid and the white one looks like a golf ball. Which is kind of true, but Samsung does have a reason for using that material and design in their latest flagship. Which the South Korean manufacturer recently explained.
“A delicate perforated pattern is applied to the back panel and attached to the elegant frame. The small holes on the panel follow a visual rhythm, providing tactile pleasure to the fingertips when users touch the back of the phone. The S5’s unique cushioning materials deliver a reassuring give when held in the user’s hands. Combined with the perforated exterior and a material soft as sheepskin, the S5 provides a truly optimal grip.”
And I have to agree with the “optimal grip” part of that statement. After using the Galaxy S5 for a few days now, the grip of the device is a whole lot better than the Galaxy S4 was. That thing was pretty slippery. While the Galaxy S5 is not slippery at all. It almost feels like the Nexus 7 (2013) and the Nexus 5. Which is a soft-touch plastic, and I really like that material. Samsung also has a website dedicated to the design of their products, which is a good read through if you’re interested.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 may not be the prettiest device out there. But it does what it does well. By that I mean that it’s waterproof, dustproof, and a lot less slippery.
