Samsung likes to put out a bunch of variants of their flagship device. Last year we saw the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Zoom, and Galaxy S4 Active. Well there was also the Galaxy S4 LTE-A in Korea, but we won’t count that. AT&T just recently made the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active official, and by recently we mean last night. Now we’re seeing pictures from Sammobile of the Galaxy S5 Mini. The complete specs have also leaked out, and it’s about what we expected from a mini-version of the Galaxy S5, as Samsung doesn’t take Sony’s lead in keeping the same internals and just shrinking the display.
What we’re looking at in terms of specs is a 4.5-inch 1280×720 resolution AMOLED display, we’re also looking at an Exynos 3 Quad processor, that’d be the 3470, which is clocked at 1.4GHz Mali-400 GPU clocked at 400MHz. We’re also looking at a 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 8MP camera with 1080p shooting capability, along with a 2.1MP front-facing shooter and a microSD card slot. It is running Android 4.4.2 KitKat along with Samsung’s latest version of Touchwiz, which includes the magazine UX. So yes, it’ll have the new flat UI that is in Touchwiz, which will be a nice change of pace.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is definitely not a “OMG that’s amazing” type of device. Especially with the Exynos 3 in there, which is about 3 years old now. But it should be pretty capable for many people. What will be the most interesting part of the Galaxy S5 Mini is the pricing. I don’t think it’ll make it to the US since Exynos doesn’t play nicely with LTE, but then again we did see the Moto G come to the US without LTE support. So it could land on pre-paid carriers. Are any of you interested in the Galaxy S5 Mini?
