In order to entice customers to sign up for a three-year plan, Rogers, Bell, and TELUS would roll out special deals during the year, such as unlimited time plans – often during a new iPhone launch. Rogers would also offer a 6GB data package for only $30 a month that could be added to any voice plan. As you may know from a previous story that we did, Roger’s new CEO Guy Laurence spoke about their new Rogers 3.0 plan and said, “The plan [he’s] laid out will significantly improve the experience for our customers and re-establish our growth by better leveraging our assets and consistently executing as One Rogers.” However, we did not realize that part of his plan was to raise the price of this grandfathered plan of 6GB of Data from $30 a month to $35 a month.
According to our source, customers are receiving messages warning them that their 6GB Data for $30 a month is going up $5 a month beginning in August. The message is assuring customers that the $5 a month increase is NOT because of the recent $3.3 billion investment in 700Mhz spectrum and is certainly not because Rogers recently paid out $12 billion for the NHL rights, but simply stated that they were, “regularly assess[ing] our pricing and offers to ensure we’re delivering the value and data our customers need.” It always amazes me that company executives can put a positive spin on anything – ‘we are raising the price to give our customers the value they need’ – if you want your to give your customers more value, then lower the price! They further commented:
“This plan was introduced as a promotion over 2 years ago and the price has not increased since then. It offers you substantial savings when compared to similar in market plans and we hope that you continue to take advantage of the great benefits this plan offers. Our customers are using more data than ever before and technology has evolved to provide more value (LTE, LTE Max).” In other words, the customers are using more data than ever and with higher speeds you are getting more for your money than before, so we can safely raise the monthly fee and you are not going anywhere.
It is true that the price of everything must go up – now this new increase is only on the month-to-month subscribers…if you are still in your three-year plan it will not increase until that contract or agreement is finished. Please hook up with us on our Google+ Page and let us know if you are in the 6GB for $30 a month plan – have you received any messages about the rate increase…as always we would love to hear from you.
