While the HTC One (M8) has been doing pretty well over here in the West, HTC has a slightly different strategy in mind for the East. We’ve already seen this in 2014 with the release of the One (E8) which eschews the aluminium build of the M8 and ditches the DuoCamera in favor of a plastic build to offer the same experience for much less. Even with the E8 on shelves though, HTC is still going to release a new Butterfly model it’d seem, as the Butterfly 2 4G has just passed through the Taiwanese NCC, their equivalent of our FCC here in the States.
The device in question has appeared with a model number of B810x and features support for GSM, WCDMA LTE on the 700 mHz frequency and LTE on 800 and 1900 mHz frequencies as well. Just as the Butterfly S did with last year’s HTC One, the Butterfly 2 is to follow in the footsteps of the M8 with a Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.5 Ghz, 2GB of RAM and a 5-inch 1080p display. 16GB of storage is listed onboard, which we’re sure will be expandable though a microSD card and just like the E8, there’s no DuoCamera or Ultrapixel here, instead the Butterly 2 is to use a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with a 5-megapixel camera around the front.
What the NCC report doesn’t tell us is whether or not the Butterfly 2 is to feature the same BoomSound speakers as the E8 and the Butterfly S, but we’re assuming as much as the sound system has now become something of a trademark for HTC. With the E8 and now the Butterfly 2 heading to shelves in the Far East, HTC’s high-end family is getting a little crowded and it might be difficult to tell the E8 and the Butterfly 2 apart from each other. Here’s hoping that HTC has something a little extra in store for Butterfly fans.
