Motorola decided to ‘let the people decide’ when it came to designing one of the many ‘faces’ that will be available for their soon to be released smartwatch, the Moto 360. With an OLED display that can be manipulated into all sorts of colors and shapes, the sky’s the limit when to comes to designing a face or look to the watch…a sort of live wallpaper if you will that you can change depending upon your mood or destination. If you are headed to the beach you might want something that reflects your vacation mood, however, if you are going to a formal function, you might want that chronograph/Rolex type look.
Motorola threw out this contest to the consumers, designers, and developers to come up with their own unique look. There were 1,300 designs submitted and an “experienced judging panel” narrowed it down to the top ten finalists: Tyler Allicock, Jose Azua, Layton Diament, Pawel Hanusowski, Dave McCarthy, Aramis Negron, David Pascual, Will Rodriguez, Paul Stringer, and Jason Wang. From there, Motorola left the final decision up to us, as determined by how many +1’s the designs received and David Pascual was chosen as the winner of the Moto 360 Design Face-Off – his design is the Moto 360 shown at the beginning of the article.
The Motorola website only says that the winner’s design may find its way onto the final Moto 360 – no promises, but hey, Mr. Pascual gets a FREE watch, so he will be happy no matter what! His design may have to be tweaked a little in order to properly work on the small (relatively speaking) watch face. It sounds like Motorola may have more contests in the future for this sort of thing, and why not, it draws a lot of fun and attention to the product.
