When NVIDIA took to the stage during 2013’s CES (remember that?) we were all stunned by the capabilities of such a device, after all it blows the 3DS and the PS Vita out of the water. A technical marvel for sure, but it was bulky, cumbersome and one of its headlining features – the ability to play your Steam games on the couch – took a long while to reach the device and for a lot of users, it was simply too expensive. Still, that isn’t to say that the Shield wasn’t a great piece of hardware – it still is – but NVIDIA isn’t a company to simply let products rest for long – anyone buying a graphics card will tell you that – and so, it’s of no surprise that a possible Shield 2 has been spotted at the FCC.
A device that looks remarkably like a Shield gaming console has passed through the FCC with the model number of P2570 which is a step up from the current Shield’s P2450 moniker and could be a clue that this is a hardware refresh of the original Shield. While the Shield and its Tegra 4 CPU is still a potent device for Android gaming, we’ve been seeing more and more of the Tegra K1 appearing in benchmarks and reference tablets from NVIDIA themselves. So, this P2570 could very well be a Shield 2, or a revamped Shield with a Tegra K1 at its heart.
The FCC listing just shows us diagrams, with very little to go on, but things don’t look too different from the original, although gaming hardware rarely changes much over the years, with controller and pad designs staying much the same for the better part of a decade.
