This past Thursday Samsung officially unveiled their thinnest tablets (6.6mm) ever, the new Galaxy Tab S series. They are very similar to the Galaxy Tab Pro series they released earlier this year, with one big difference – these new tablet have their famous AMOLED displays. They are now available for pre-order at many of the larger Canadian retailers, such as Best Buy, Future Shop, The Source, and Staples and are expected to arrive in the stores on June 27. The U.S. versions are costing $399 for the 8.4-inch model and $499 for the 10.5-inch version, however, it looks like our Canadian brethren are being subjected to a $20 premium on either model.
Most of the specifications are the same between the 8.4-inch and 10.5-inch models – both are using the 2560 x 1600 resolution AMOLED displays with 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, although there is a microSD slot to add an additional 64GB of memory. There is an Exynos 5429 in the Wi-Fi version and a Snapdragon 800 in the LTE version. The is a 8MP main camera and a 2MP front facing camera for video chatting and selfies. The Galaxy Tab S also comes with a fingerprint scanner for added security, as well as Multi-user and Kids Mode. The battery size of 4900mAh and 7900mAh, respectively, should give you great service – especially coupled with Samsung’s Ultra Power Saving Mode (UPSM) that closes unnecessary background apps while keeping the essential apps running and switches the display to black and white.
Samsung has really put some thought into the features on the Galaxy Tab S. For security – Multi-User allows different users to create their own unique login via the Fingerprint Scanner, which allows them to see only information under their personal login. Kids Mode allows the parents to easily control what features their child may use and can also limit their own screen time. With Multi-Window, you can have two independent apps running at the same time and visible on your display. The tablets come with Samsung’s updated Magazine UX and offers some freebies and trial subscriptions.
