Sponsored Game Review: Squirly

Description: Squirly is an endless runner type of game for Android that will appeal to younger players. Not only is Squirly a cute squirrel, his game features some good-looking graphics and the whole game is lighthearted and younger players will find the game cute and fun. The premise of the game is to guide Squirly through the trees by tapping left and right, he needs acorns to keep on going, but you also need to help him dodge branches, snakes and watch out for the monkeys as well. There’s a slew of power-ups and boosts available as well, but if you don’t want to spend any money while playing, you don’t have to. Take a look at the teaser trailer below to see if you like the look of Squirly.

How it Works: To help our furry friend get all of the acorns he can eat, we’ll first need to download Squirly from the Play Store. You can choose to log in to Facebook if you’d like.

Getting to grips with the controls is nice and easy, and they’re well explained to new players.

Things start off nice and easy, with the trees going by nice and slowly.

However, as you get further into the game, you’ll come across obstacles like branches and animals like the Monkey that throws bananas at you and the snake that jumps out of the branches at you.

At the end of each level, you’re given a high-score. If you like, you can use a continue to carry on.

You come across a lot of different powerups and boosts throughout the game, but you can always buy more.

Opinion: Endless runner games, where you keep on going to get the best score you possibly can, are well-suited for mobile. After all they’re almost take it or leave it gaming, there’s no regiment to follow here. That, and the fun graphics, simple yet challenging gameplay that’s also rewarding, is what makes Squirly a good game for little ones. It’s also got some catchy, if a little basic, gameplay mechanics that older players will find appealing and perhaps even addictive. I found the game a good time, and we’re sure that younger players will enjoy this a lot on their tablets and smartphones.

Pros

  • No complicated controls to learn, just tap left or right.
  • Obstacles gradually get more difficult to dodge as times go on, with a gradual increase in difficulty.
  • High-scores and flashy power-ups will keep children entertained as they create super high-scores.
  • Lots of power-ups and boosts available for those looking to post the ultimate high-score.

Cons

  • In-app purchases do seem a little expensive, but getting rid of ads can be done in one purchase on its own.
  • The graphics are good, but they could do with being of a higher resolution for tablets and newer smartphones.

Conclusion: Squirly isn’t going to win any awards for originality, and that’s just fine. What Squirly does well is offer younger players a fun, eye-catching endless runner adventure with fun graphics for free. Boosts and such can be bought if you like, but younger players will find the challenge of reaching their next high-score enough fun on its own. A simple and addictive game, your kids might really take to this, and you might enjoy it as well.
