Gaining a foothold outside of their bastion is the dream of all Chinese manufacturers, be it the likes of well-known Xiaomi and OPPO, or the upper comer Gionee. Speaking of the latter, Gionee had created waves when it had surprised the global markets with their ultra slim smartphone concept – the Gionee Elife S5.5, which measured in at a very slim 5.5 mm. As a matter of fact, the Elife S 5.5 was touted as the slimmest phone ever and the device has lived up to the hype – until now.
If the leaksters over in China are giving us correct information, the title of the slimmest phone would soon be taken off from the hands of the Elife S5.5 and be handed over to another Gionee sibling, currently known by its model number – GN9005. This information is lent credence by the fact that the leak comes directly from TENNA, which is China’s equivalent of the FCC, which has certified the device for use on the China Mobile TD-LTE 4G network. The Gionee GN9005 measures in at 5mm or 0.2 inches in thickness, which in comparison to the Apple iPhone 5S is around 2.6 mm trimmer (the iPhone 5S measures in at 7.6mm). The device carries the specs of a medium ranger, with a 4.8 inch AMOLED display offering a 720p HD resolution (720 X 1280 pixels). The processing power is catered to by a quad-core 1.2 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM. 16 GB of onboard storage is available, however there is no news of an inbuilt MicroSD card slot. An 8 mega pixels (MP) primary camera would take care of the occasional shutterbug inside you, while the 5 MP front facing secondary camera will take care of all selfie and video call needs. The device is powered by a 2,500 mAh battery and comes pre-loaded with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. There is no confirmation for a Kit Kat update though.
The Gionee Elife E7 and S5.5 have earlier established the brand as a quality maker, however Gionee still needs to pack a punch, apart from the slim profile, to be able to come into the mainstream with the likes of Samsung, HTC and Sony.
