For those that have used Samsung phones for a while, you probably love AMOLED displays and can’t live without them. There’s one reason why I don’t like them and that’s screen burn in. But for me it’s not a big deal since I never keep my phones that long. But for others it could be a rather big deal. But AMOLED displays are Samsung’s baby, and they are really great displays especially for consuming media content. As much as we like to make fun of AMOLED displays because you can’t see them outdoors (this was before the Galaxy Note 3’s display), it’s still a great display.
According to the graph below, from NPD Display Search, AMOLED displays have been getting cheaper and cheaper to get. While LCD displays have stayed about the same price. So it appears that the AMOLED displays will be a little bit cheaper than the LCD displays, which could mean more manufacturers turning to Samsung’s AMOLED displays. Which we’ve already seen some manufacturers begin to use these AMOLED displays, like Motorola. Which used them in the Moto X, Droid Mini, Droid Maxx and Droid Ultra. And the reason why Motorola used AMOLED is the fact that AMOLED displays light up individual pixels, which made it easier for their Active Display feature to not kill the battery. Which is also why the Samsung Gear Live gets better battery life than the LG G Watch.
It’ll be interesting to see how many manufacturers begin using AMOLED displays in the next two years. Many of the Chinese OEMs already use them in their devices as well. And I’m sure Samsung won’t mind selling these displays to other manufacturers in the coming years. How many of you prefer AMOLED over LCD or IPS displays? Let us know in the comments below.
