For some time now, we’ve been hearing about a device from AT&T and HTC that’s all about the ‘selfie’ and now, somewhat out of the blue, comes word that Sony is working on a device with selfie powers as well. We’ve heard a number of different codenames when it comes to upcoming Sony smartphones for the second half of 2014, but this latest leak has taken us by surprise a little bit. Not because a company like Sony is working on a selfie-phone, that’s pretty much inevitable at this point, but that we’ve heard more about the HTC device and seen nothing of it. It’s rumored that Sony is looking to announced the Xperia Z2a for Taiwan in the next couple of days and that this device is to be coming along for the ride.
Two images of this alleged selfie phone have surfaced over at Esato, and while one of them simply shows the rear of the device, another show the front of the device with what appears to be a codename label naming the device ‘Gina’. Towards the top of this image, there seems to be a fairly large camera module, and according to the rumor, there will also be a front-facing flash included with the device. We’ve seen smartphones with 13-megapixel front-facing cameras and Oppo’s N1 with a rotating camera for great selfies, but this is the first we’ve seen on this front from a big name like Sony.
What we’re looking at here is probably some sort of mid-range device for Sony that enables users to take better selfies, allowing Sony further reach into the market and an excellent marketing gimmick to promote the device with when it comes to market. There’s something to be said of the selfie, it’s obviously something that you either love or hate, but it’s a big deal right now and if you can say your smartphone takes a good selfie, then you’re bound to get some attention – just ask Samsung.
UPDATE: Sony has just tweeted a teaser of the upcoming device and it’s said that we’re going to see this selfie-focused device be announce by the company tomorrow.
