After a quick teaser yesterday, Samsung has made their newest Exynos Processor the real deal. It’s the Exynos ModAP, which is a quad-core applications processor, and an LTE-A capable modem. Which the “Mod” part of the name comes from the Modem and the “AP” from the applications processor, in case you didn’t get that hint. It’s a 28nm chip that should provide plenty of power while keeping stuff cool and quiet, which is what we expect from our devices in this day and age. The LTE modem in this processor supports LTE Release 9 and Cat 4 with duplex mode, FDD, and TDD, and the requisite 2G and 3G radios too. In addition to this being a quad-core processor with LTE-A capability, it also brings in an advanced image signal processor “devices with high resolution cameras can enjoy full capabilities like video recording in higher quality or playing back graphics in higher quality or format with no lag or buffering.”
Additionally there is the new “The Exynos RF companion chip”, which is built to “enhance the way mobile devices handle various modes of connectivity”. So that we should see better handling from 3G to 4G to LTE to even LTE Advanced. Because we know that HSPA+ (4G in the US according to T-Mobile and AT&T) aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. It’ll be a bit before we see this processor in some upcoming devices, but it’s likely to be in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 4. As Samsung usually puts their own chips in their devices, but the last few years we’ve gotten Qualcomm processors here in the US due to LTE. But with the Exynos ModAP we should be seeing these in the Galaxy Note 4 US variants, unless of course they can’t mass produce enough in time for release.
