Sony appears to be working on a new camera that is the worlds first curved sensor camera, and quite possibly the most compact camera sensor, while also potentially being the highest quality camera of its size. The curved Exmor RS CMOS sensor should allow for better images in the long run, due to various factors like less distortion and higher sensitivity. The curved CMOS sensor is said to be of 22MP quality which is shown off by the resolution in the rumored specs sheet below, not too hard to believe considering their Xperia Z2 and at least one other device carries a 20.8MP camera sensor currently, so 22MP isn’t a huge jump and seems a very attainable goal for them. The real magic would be the features, or rather specs of the camera, while also keeping the high quality image capability in possibly the most compact size to ever be produced.
According to the spec sheet data shown in the image below, the picture resolution goes all the way up to 7680 x 2880, at 12fps, and goes as low as 3840 x 1080 at 60 fps. The sensor also appears to have a 10.8 stop in ISO 640 dynamic range, and a small diagonal size of 6.67mm. Other details reveal that the sensor has a 20mm focal length, and a f/1.2 aperture. Sony is known for their awesome quality cameras in smartphones, especially more recently the last few devices, and we could very well see this in an upcoming flagship device from Sony down the road. It would be awesome to see this inside of the Sony Xperia Z3 but with rumors stating that the Z3 could get an unveiling at IFA in September that seems less likely, unless Sony has plans to actually launch the device for sale later on, giving them more time to implement the sensor into a device.
Sony is also expected to unveil some information about the sensor at an event on September 16th called Photokina, which is close to a week after IFA ends in Berlin(which goes from September 5th, to September 10th). If we do see the Xperia Z3 at IFA, and if Sony isn’t likely to give out more details on this curved sensor until nearly a
week after the IFA show, a future device we have yet to know about from them would be more likely as the first device to house this sensor inside.
