Sponsored Game Review: 4096 Hexa

Description: 4096 Hexa is a puzzle game for Anroid that takes some inspiration from the popular 2048 game that’s been gaining in popularity and doubles up the fun. Not only do you need to get to 4096 to win the game, but also to do so on a hexagonal grid. With a focus on simplicity and gameplay, 4096 Hexa uses a light, colorful theme and hooks right into Google Play Games for achievements as well as leaderboards. The concept at its core is the same as 2048, you need to put 2 and 2 together to make one 4 tile and so on, until you can create not a 2048 tile, but a 4096 tile. At its core, it might sound like you just need to find one more tile, but getting two of those tiles is a real challenge.

How it Works: First of all, you’ll have to download 4096 Hexa from the Play Store. Once you have it running, you’ll be treated to a quick tutorial on how to actually play the game.

When you first get started, you’ll be dealing with some pretty small numbers, but that’s sort of the point, the first few moves determine how well you’ll do later on in the game.

After playing for a little while, you’ll have more tiles and more numbers to deal with.

When you get further into the gameplay, you’ll have larger numbers to deal with as well as blocked tiles, to free them up, you need to move the listed number into that tile. So, put a 128 tile into the 128 gray spot.

The play area can get really quite crowded, adding to the difficulty.

If you can’t make any further moves, that’s it game over! You’ll be given a score as well as the opportunity to share your score over Google Play Games.

Opinion: While I’m a big puzzle fan, I’m not much of a mathematician, which is where 4096 Hexa becomes even more of an experience for me. There’s very little that needs to be done here mathematically, which is nice for someone like myself. It’s pretty simple to put 2 + 2 together, much like it is to put 512 and 512 together. So what 4096 Hexa comes down to is a simple, yet challenging mind game that relies on strategy and a little forward thinking. It can take a little while for things to get going, but once you get into those high numbers, and one wrong move could ruin all your hard work, that’s when the game really becomes a challenge, and a fun one at that.

Ratings

  • Speed (4/5) – Even though there’s not much going on here, 4096 Hexa is still a speedy game and it runs just fine.
  • Features (5/5) – The core gameplay here is great, and even though it just tweaks an already popular formula it’s still challenging, addicting and great for puzzle fans.
  • Theme (4/5) – With pastel colors and some smooth animations, 4096 Hexas is good-looking and works well on both smartphones and tablets.
  • Overall (4/5) – An excellent puzzle game that both fans and non-fans of 2048 should take to, all you need is a little patience and a good head on your shoulders.

Pros

  • Good game for long commutes or lazy afternoons, it’s a time drain, but the more you play the game, the less time it should take you to get up into the higher numbers.
  • A simple game, 4096 is easy to get hooked on and the rules aren’t that complicated at all.
  • It might be easy to pick up and play, but it’s no less challenging, making this one for those puzzle masters.
  • Integrates well with Google Play Games to connect with others.

Cons

  • Might feel a little too much like 2048 for die-hard players.
  • A larger grid size might make for a nice addition as an easy mode for new players.

Conclusion: if you’re looking for a puzzle game that’s simple, a little more challenging than most and just asks for a good brain and nothing more, then 4096 Hexa is well worth a go. It’s not the most exciting game out there, but it’s fun to play and if you’re into 2048, then 4096 should suit you, besides it’s nice and colorful and has some cool music going on in the background to boot.
