Description: Open TD: WallCraft is a game for Android from a developer that’s become well known for their Tower Defense games and with Open TD: WallCraft they hope to create an experience for those that just want to enjoy the Tower Defense gameplay at their leisure. There are three game modes in Open TD: WallCraft, a training mode that helps you build up attacks and such for your soldiers, a story mode which allows you to play against different commanders from history and experience different styles of combat. The WallCraft mode allows players to create their own formation of soldiers and then compete against others online all over the world. At its heart, Open TD: WallCraft is a Tower Defense game, but do the extra features help make this a more enjoyable experience?
How it Works: First of all, you’ll need to download Open TD: WallCraft from the Play store. When you launch the game, you’ll be greeted with a mode select screen of sorts. With the Soldier Camps being the training mode, the Stories of Shu your story mode and the WallCraft mode is your online multiplayer.
To get started with the game, you’ll want to head on over to the Solider Camps.
Here, you can build up your soldiers and just play Tower Defense and move through the levels. Things start off fairly easily here, but they soon become more challenging. Placing soldiers is pretty easy and everything is explained to you with subtle prompts as you make your way through the game.
Here, you can experiment with different arrangements of soldiers, as well as experiment with the boosts like speed up and block.
The WallCraft part of Open TD: WallCraft is perhaps what will appeal most to seasoned Tower Defense players.
In the WallCraft part of the game, you can browse through arrangements from other people around the world and see if you can best them.
The Story mode is a lot of fun as well, but I won’t ruin it for you here.
Opinion: The core gameplay at work here in Open TD: WallCraft is really good fun, especially so if you’re a big fan of Tower Defense. While things do start off a little slowly in the Soldier Campls, the Stories of Shu adds a nice extra dynamic and the online multiplayer is nice to see here as well. There’s a mix of things here in Open TD: WallCraft which is part of the game’s appeal and much like other WSW games before it, the animations here are nice and fluid with a good level of details as well. Those that are into their strategy shouldn’t be disappointed here and there are daily rewards for playing a little every day, making it a good game to play regularly.
Ratings
- Speed (4/5) – With no issues here, Open TD: WallCraft runs great, but it’d be nice if things got a little more challenging quicker.
- Features (5/5) – Open TD: WallCraft has a little bit of everything, including a solid approach to multiplayer, and some excellent Tower Defense gameplay.
- Theme (4/5) – The animations here are good with fluidity and a good level of detail making battlegrounds feel vibrant and fresh.
- Overall (4.5/5) – It’s nice to see a game like Open TD: WallCraft hit Android, as after all it’s packed full of Tower Defense fun and rewards players for coming back time and time again.
Pros
- The three game modes offer a little something different, all converging around excellent Tower Defense gameplay.
- Fairly easy to get into, with a decent amount of depth for players to keep on coming back to.
- Players that play daily are given tokens and rewards, with mini-games on offer to win even more.
- Good game for tablets and long commutes.
Cons
- Interactive introduction to each game mode would be nice to see.
- Soldier Camps can take quite some time before it gets to the more advanced units.
Conclusion: I had a good time with Open TD: WallCraft as I do with many Tower Defense games, but what’s nice about this is that there’s a good selection of game modes on offer, and they all hinge on the same great gameplay mechanics we’ve seen in other WSW games. It’d be nice to see some sort of interactive guide to the different modes as it can be a little confusing at first. Still, that’s not much of a problem and the overall experience is good, with rewards for players that keep on coming back.
