For a little while now, we’ve known that HTC is to announce a new Desire during IFA, with an “IFA Breakfast” scheduled during the event in Berlin next week. However, what we don’t know is well, pretty much anything about the device in question and yet, HTC keeps on teasing us. The rumor mill has already predicted that the Desire 820 is to feature one of Qualcomm’s upcoming 64-bit Snapdragons, with the octa-core Snapdragon 615 the chip we’ve been hearing most about. Now, HTC has taken to Chinese social media once again to tease their latest addition to the Desire family.
By listing a number of devices from HTC’s past that were ‘firsts’ in some way or another, like 2008’s EVO 4G being the world’s first device with WiMax built in, and the HTC One (M8) the first device to feature two camera sensors at its rear for more imaginative picture taking. Listed at the bottom of this list – which is sadly all in Chinese – is the Desire 820, with a fill-in-the-blank gap left for fans to keep guessing. The rumor mill has been telling us that the Desire 820 is to be HTC’s first 64-bit handset, with the Snapdragon 615 pegged to be at the heart of the 820. The Snapdragon 615 is an octa-core CPU that features four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.0 Ghz and another four clocked higher for more heavy-lifting at 2.0 Ghz or so. There are however, other options for the Desire 820 to use in order to go the 64-bit route, with the Snapdragon 410 being a logical progression away from the Snapdragon 400 that HTC have used a number of times in the past.
Focusing on the mid-range and low-end of the market has proved something of a success for HTC, it’s where there’s a little more money to be made and the Desire family can offer some great value for money. It’s just a shame however, that HTC have decided to use a completely illogical naming scheme for the Desire family, with three digits after every new model that could basically mean anything, but still the mid-range is an important sector to focus on, especially in emerging markets, so it’ll be interesting to see just what HTC have to show us next month in Berlin.
