John Legere Wants To Know When You Think Magenta Will Pass Sprint

This has been a pretty busy week of news for both Sprint and T-Mobile and it all started when Sprint stopped trying to buy T-Mobile and then decided to replace Dan Hesse as CEO of the company. Softbank has put their own guy in charge starting on the 11th, that’s Marcelo Claure. But it didn’t stop there. That same day, T-Mobile announced that they are now number one for prepaid, surpassing Sprint’s prepaid carriers of Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile. Which had been number one for quite a while. That wasn’t the end either.

Legere decided to tweet that T-Mobile would become the number 3 carrier by the end of the year. And if you look at the numbers both carriers have been putting up for the past few quarters, that’s not really a hard thing to do. As T-Mobile has been adding 1 million or more new customers each quarter for the past 5 quarters. While Sprint has been bleeding customers left and right. In Q2 they lost about 220k customers, which was their smallest loss in quite some time. So that might be signaling a turnaround, but it’s hard to say.

Later on, T-Mobile’s outspoken CEO came out to say that he thinks they will overtake Sprint by the end of the year and wanted to know when he thinks Magenta will do it. With the hashtag #OvertakeSprint. Seeing as T-Mobile is only about 3 million behind Sprint, the end of Q4 sounds very doable. But with Q3 and Q4 being the biggest quarters of the year, typically, it may even be sooner. But then again, Sprint has a new CEO, and from what we’ve seen, he’s outspoken like Legere, so things will get really interesting.

So what do you think? How long before T-Mobile jumps to the three spot? Let us know in the comments below.
