If you take a look at the Google Play Store you’ll see that only the Nexus 5 is currently available for purchase. Both Nexus 7 and a significantly older Nexus 10 are out of stock at the time of writing this article. This actually raises the questions what is going on, where are the Nexus tablets and devices in general? The most logical answer is, of course, that Google is preparing to launch a new gen Nexus devices. Quite frankly I don’t see any other answer to that questions, I doubt they’re selling so much of those that they just can’t keep up the demand considering how “old” these are.
Anyhow, we’ve seen many rumors when it comes to the upcoming Nexus devices, the most interesting ones are about a Motorola-made Nexus phablet and an HTC-made Nexus tablet. These are all rumors at this point, but they both seem very plausible. There were several rumors Motorola is going to be OEM of choice for Google Nexus 6 and it will allegedly sport a 5.9-inch screen, which is a bit odd if you ask me. It seems weird they want to jump from a 5-inch to a 5.9-inch display. We have more rumored information when it comes to the HTC T1 tablet (Nexus 8/Flounder/Volantis), no matter how you want to call it, this thing has been leaking like crazy for a while now. The latest information says the device will sport a 64-bit Tegra K1 processor and 4GB of RAM along with an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.6-megapixel front-facing one. NFC will also be a part of the package according to the latest leak (linked above) as well as Android “L” as an operating system of choice. There’s been many discussion when it comes to this HTC-made Nexus tablet, some people consider this to be far-fetched considering the specifications, others however believe the leaks to be true.
The Nexus 5 was announced in October last year, so there’s still time as far as next-gen Nexus smartphone / phablet launch goes. Nexus 7 (2013) was announced in July last year however, so it is kind of overdue at this point. Talking about overdue, Nexus 10 will be 2 years old in October this year. You might argue Google didn’t have a reason to launch a refresh to Nexus 10 last year, however I believe they intend to push a device which covers the sweet spot between the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 (8-9″ maybe, as rumored) and release 1 tablet to cover both bases. This seems like a somewhat logical option although I can see many people being irritated by such a move by Google. As for the “being late” part when it comes to Nexus 7, Android “L” might be at least a part of the reason for that. I believe Google wants to release it on both their smartphone and a tablet(s) from the start and the OS might not be ready yet. What are your thoughts on all this?
