We haven’t really heard much from Oppo as of late. This China-based smartphone manufacturer managed to surprise the world with the quality of their smartphones as well as some neat features they included in them. Take Oppo N1 as an example with its rotating 13-megapixel camera which was both rear and front-facing depending the on the way which side you decided to rotate it. Oppo Find 7 is yet another great example with its “Super Zoom” camera feature which lets it create a 50-megapixel image while having only a 13-megapixel sensor on the back. This actually worked fine on the surprise of many.
Today Oppo unveiled Oppo Neo 5, a successor to the Oppo Neo announced back in February. We haven’t exactly heard much about this device, so let’s get to it. Compared to the Oppo Neo, this is a significant improvement. Oppo Neo 5 is sporting a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 400 quad-core CPU clocked at 1.2GHz along with 1GB of RAM and just 4GB of internal storage which is expandable via MicroSD card up to 32GB. On the front of the device you can find a 4.5-inch display 854 x 480 in resolution (218ppi). 5-megapixel camera (with BSI CMOS sensor) is located at the back of the device while you can find a 2-megapixel shooter on the front. This thing is powered by a 1,900mAh battery and Android 4.3 JellyBean is here out of the box. It is also worth noting this is an LTE capable device and it comes with a few “screen-off gestures”. Speaking of software, this device comes with Oppo’s ColorOS on top of Android. The device measures 132 x 65.8 x 9.2mm and it weights 132.5g. Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and the usual sensors are all included as well.
As you can see from the specifications, this is a low to mid-range device. Most of you would probably say low-end period, but depending on the market that doesn’t have to be the case. As far as performance goes this device could perform well if Oppo managed to optimize their ColorOS skin properly. Oppo Neo 5 will be available in Malaysia starting next week for $190. They didn’t share any plans to launch this thing on other markets at this point, they probably will soon though. We’ll let you know as soon as we find out more information.
