Pantech is one of those companies that do make pretty interesting phones but we almost never see them make their way into the US. We have seen a few of their phones launch on AT&T and Verizon, but for the most part those were low-end and mid-range phones. No flagships, really. Which kinda sucks, because they do make some really great flagships. Pantech’s latest flagship, the Pop Up Note, is a new phablet which has a very unique design, and it looks really cool. But again, we’ll likely never see this device in the US, unfortunately.
On the back you’ll see it has a bit of a rugged texture, but also has a bit of a lip around the camera, so that when you place your phone down the camera isn’t getting scratched up. There’s also a fingerprint scanner back there, which looks really nice, actually. It’ll be interesting to see how that works out for Pantech, as HTC put their fingerprint scanner back there and it really didn’t work to well at all. Some of the other specs include “5.5-inch Full HD LCD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz, an Adreno 330 graphics chip and 2 GB of RAM. There are 16 GB of storage on-board expandable via microSD, while the back panel accommodates a 13 MP main camera, whereas a 2.1 MP sensor resides next to the front-facing speaker.”
Pantech has been having a bit of trouble lately, as they recently filed for bankruptcy protection. So while this device may not help keep them out of bankruptcy, it should still sell pretty well. Especially if they can sell it outside of Korea. I know a lot of people are itching for a bigger phone with a Stylus, and the Pop Up Note does just that. It doesn’t quite compete with the Galaxy Note though, because those devices are bigger.
