Not to be outdone by it’s homeland competitor, LG, Samsung has just announced the Gear S and Gear Circle. This is a new Tizen smartwatch that are going to be shown off at IFA next week, during the show and also at Samsung’s IFA press conference on September 3rd. The Gear S is their next-generation Gear smartwatch and the Gear Circle is a pair of headphones that you can pair with the Gear S to take calls and such from your Gear S. The Gear S is running on Tizen, so let’s sigh real quick.
The Samsung Gear S has a 2-inch curved AMOLED display. Which we’ll all probably love. As we did love the Gear Fit earlier this year with it’s curved display. While the display is bigger (2 inches vs 1.83 inches on the Gear 2) it probably won’t be that noticeable since it is curved now. The Gear S also has 3G, Bluetooth and Wifi connectivity. Now they haven’t said that it supports a SIM card slot, but it definitely sounds like it does.
“Samsung is leading this exciting and rapidly developing wearable category through progressive innovation,” said JK Shin, CEO and head of IT & mobile communication at Samsung Electronics. “The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime.”
Samsung has stated that the Gear S and Gear Circle will be available throughout Samsung’s usual retail channels in October. And that’s about the time we expect the Galaxy Note 4 to be available in most places as well. Which is still yet to be announced. As usual with Samsung’s Tizen smartwatches, this one will only connect with other Samsung devices running Android 4.3 and above. Samsung says you should get about 2 days of usage out of the Gear S and about 300 standby hours on the Gear Circle, which has a pretty small 180mAh battery inside.
