We wrote last week that the new Samsung Galaxy Alpha would be headed to EE, the UK’s largest network, and would be up for pre-order soon. EE’s Head of Device Portfolio, Nicola Shenton said at the time that, “EE’s superfast 4G network is the perfect partner for Samsung’s new flagship device. With powerful performance and a real emphasis on design, Samsung has developed a great new handset that seamlessly combines style and substance. Add the biggest and fastest 4G network in the UK and you have a smartphone that ticks all the boxes.” It looks like ‘soon’ is about to arrive as sales dates were finally announced.
Samsung has announced that the Galaxy Alpha will be available for pre-order on August 28 from select retailers or the Samsung UK store. The Samsung Experience Store will begin selling it on September 10, as will the Samsung Store in Westfield Stratford City. Retail partners will begin selling the Galaxy Alpha on September 12.
It is hard to classify the new Galaxy Alpha – it is more “sexy” (only 6.7mm thick) than the Galaxy S5, yet not as high-end spec wise – so is it a high-end because it looks nice or a mid-range device because of the specifications…you be the judge. The Galaxy Alpha comes with a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display, which means it has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and 312 Pixels-Per Inch. For those Galaxy Alphas bound to the U.S. it will pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 and another model will have Samsung’s own Exynos 5 Octa-Core 5430 processor – each with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage with no microSD card for expansion…strange for a Samsung device. It will sport a 12MP main camera with an LED Flash and a 2.1MP camera on the front for video chatting and selfies. It will include a fingerprint scanner and Heart Rate Monitor like the Galaxy S5. It is powered by a 1860mAh battery and will use Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box.
