The Samsung Galaxy Alpha has finally been unveiled in what can only be described as ‘unexciting’ announcement…but that seems to go along with the theme of the latest video cooked up by Samsung’s marketing department…’unexciting.’ We realize that the new Galaxy Alpha is geared more towards the professional creative type consumer, looking for a compact, yet elegant smartphone that fits in well with their lifestyle…and the video does a good job of portraying that. However, most creative people I know are dynamic and full of life – at least somewhat exciting. This video almost makes them all look like they are hardworking, yet rather dull and mechanical in nature and even the end of the video does nothing to make you want to run out to purchase the Galaxy Alpha.
In the beginning, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha was rumored to have the Galaxy S5 specs or maybe even a bumped up QHD display or Qualcomm Snapdragon 805, but it ended up being one of those devices we would easily classify as mid-range. It has a smaller or lessor of everything than the Galaxy S5 – the display drops in size to 4.7-inches, but also drops in resolution to 720p. The power comes from Samsung’s own Exynos octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz for the upper cores and 1.3GHz for the lower cores. It does retain the 2GB of RAM, if for no other reason, to help keep their TouchWiz running smooth. LTE Cat. 6 will insure that when LTE-A comes to your region you will be ready to jump on board. It measures 132.4 x 65.5 x 6.7mm and weighing in at a mere 115 grams…making it a very thin design and a lightweight too, considering that it has a metal frame. It is not much bigger than the current iPhone, yet has a larger display.
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha will first go on sale in Russia, taking pre-orders on Friday, August 15, with a shipping date starting on September 12. The asking price in Russia is about equivalent to $690 – a niche area where it is priced above the Galaxy S5 mini, but below the Galaxy S5 flagship. The Galaxy Alpha should follow with launchings in over 150 countries…but whether this type of thinking on Samsung’s part will work out or backfire, remains to be seen. We just wished that Samsung would have added a little more excitement to its marketing style – hopefully Samsung is more enthusiastic about the device than they let on in the video.
Please hit us up on our Google+ Page and let us know what you think about Samsung’s strategy – is there one or was the Galaxy Alpha the result of a knee-jerk reaction to poor Galaxy S5 sales…as always, we would love to hear from you.
